Decline of the Fur Industry

The fur industry was an essential economic foundation for Canadians and Indigenous communities as a way to gain and trade resources. Today, we see the decline of the fur trade with the rise of animal activism

The voice of the people

The way people live has changed from the beginning of the fur trade creating a society with a loud voice.

The fur industry's decline is due to this voice and technology carrying this voice.

Fur as a movement

How has the fur industry maintained its presence today?

Luxury Brands

Many luxury brands still use real fur in their clothing. Many influential celebrities still wear real fur produced by these luxury brands.

Cruelty Free Production

Many luxury brands have made a commitment to switching to cruelty free production of textile furs.

Social Scrutiny

Wearing real fur is frowned upon in society but there are many people who prefer it to synthetic textiles so they still wear it.

International Impacts

Since the anti-fur movement is global, there has been a global decrease in the demand for real fur

When the fur industry declined in Canada, China was still producing mass amount of fur but started to decrease production in 2014 (Haute Acorn, 2017).

The decline of the fur industry has led to the loss of jobs.

People who were working in this field for years now lack a lot of experience that is needed to find another job.

Less is More

Many indigenous peoples lost their jobs due  to the decline in the fur industry.

Fur is still a major part of their culture so they still participate in hunting for furs.

Since many companies switched to cruelty free production or switched to synthetic fibres this changed the work.

Workers have to handle chemicals with synthetic fibres.
